Putnoe Woods
Putnoe Wood is located by Mowesbury Park and has maintained paths to give a firm walking surface.

The wood is about 25 acres in size and is mainly  Ash and Oak.

The current trees are all of a similar age, probably planted around 1900.
In the past it would have been a lot larger, in the doomsday book  (1086) it states it could support 100 pigs, so it was probably between 4 and 14 times larger than at present.
There are areas of Hazel coppice that are managed on a 7 year cycle. Cut over winter then allowed to re-grow for 7 years before being cut again. These managed areas are to the north of the central path.

There are many wild flowers in the wood, especially pretty in Spring, when the Wood Anemone, Lesser Celandine and Bluebells are out.

There are also lots of different birds to be heard and seen within the wood and on its margins.
