About Us

RedRag Theatre Company was formed in 2008 by four Scottish actors and a number of theatre enthusiasts.

The group has been formed to produce and stage original theatre works with a Scottish theme.

Its first production will be of Lest We Forget, a play written to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Piper Alpha Oil Disaster on 6 July 1988. The company is set to tour again from October with Doorways in Drumorty.

New Production - Doorways in Drumorty

Tour starts October 2010

Doorways In Drumorty is a new play by Mike Gibb (Mother of All the Peoples, Five Pound & Twa Bairns, Clarinda, Lest We Forget) set in the North East of Scotland, inspired and based on the writings of Lorna Moon, the lass from Strichen who became the highest paid Hollywood screenwriter of her era.

During the later part of her life Lorna wrote a series of short stories, subsequently published as Doorways In Drumorty, which caused controversy in her native Aberdeenshire with many of the locals recognising themselves amongst the thinly disguised characters.

The play interweaves several of these stories, both amusing and poignant, into a work that is warm, charming and humorous and that captures the mood of the rural North East in the 1920’s, an era when the chief currency was gossip!

Our first production

The four actors who helped set up RedRag first worked together in the original cast of Lest We Forget, a play commissioned by Duncan Hendry of Aberdeen Performing Acts to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Piper Alpha Oil Disaster on 6 July 1988, which enjoyed a brief but highly successful run at the Lemon Tree Studio Theatre in July 2008.

Following its success, interest was expressed by a number of venues in rural North East Scotland together with the prestigious Dundee REP Theatre. Having secured the rights for a touring production from playwright Mike Gibb, RedRag Theatre Company was formed.

The play was performed for two nights (8/9 May 2009) at the Lemon Tree and played at the Dundee REP on 15/16 May. It went on to tour a number of North East venues (in conjunction with NEAT) such as The Warehouse, Lossiemouth and Lonach Hall, Strathdon.
